Lightspark 0.4.8 released!

Just a quick note to announce that Lightspark 0.4.8 has been released! The main difference from the RC1 is that a nasty memory allocation bug has been fixed, greatly reducing the amount of memory used when playing video. This release of the free, high performance, flash player implementation officially supports YouTube (as usual) and Vimeo (new entry!) You can find the code on Launchpad. Testing and bug reporting is extremely welcome. You can also usually find (friendly) support on the #lightspark IRC channel on FreeNode. As a last note, a regression of the NVIDIA proprietary driver forced me to start using nouveau and, although I was fairly skeptic, I’m pretty happy so far. This of course means lightspark will be finally developed and tested throughly on a completely free stack!

Update: I forgot to cherry pick one commit before the release and so 0.4.8 don’t actually build. 0.4.8.1 fixes the issue. Sorry for the silly mistake.

It’s nice to hear that you are now using nouveau :)
Also, I’ve just sent a word to the Arch packagers for the new release.

How does Lightspark handle Flash Cookies? Can I set it to only allow for this session?

Flash cookies are not yet supported. This, incidentally, means that they can’t be used to track users. We’re working hard to improve the coverage of supported features over time.

Sure I understand. Your work is very much appreciated! Do you keep a list of planned features or features that would be nice to have?

Our current plans are more applications oriented than features oriented, this means that we’re implementing stuff when those are needed to support our target apps. Our next supported application will probably be grooveshark or something like that.

Maybe you’ve not installed the right build packages. That file should definitely exists with g++ 4.6. I’m not sure about what are the right packages for fedora though. There may be some hints here: https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/lightspark/wiki/Building

The Ubuntu PPA for maverick only includes an older 0.4.6 version, unforunately. Any chance you could get the recent version to build for maverick also?

I’m afraid we don’t have to manpower to keep official compatibility with older distros. Moreover during lightspark development we often improve other libraries, especially their thread safety and backporting all of them would be too heavy.
