Preparazione ai test

Messaggio da ElenaM »

Ciao a tutti.

PS Alcuni libriche mi hanno aiutato per i temi del concorso sono "How we die" - Nuland; "The man who mistook his wife for a hat" - Sacks; "Connetomics" - Seung, "Il gene egoista"- Dawkins, e soprattutto ti consiglio davvero "Il caso e la necessità" di Monod: indipendentemente dall'interesse biologico, è scritto bene ed è filosoficamente illuminante.
Per medicina in generale, secondo me sarebbe giusto che tutti leggessero "This is going to hurt" - Kay, e magari anche "The house of God" -Shem.

Hello everyone, I
am a student of the last year of high school and I wanted to ask you what were the best sources to prepare for the competition (of course next year, I write here because there is not right yet a section for the academic year 2018/19 ). I found "The problems of Mathematics of the Normale di Pisa" which collects all the tests from 1906 to 1984.
I also read the dedicated page on the Sant'Anna website on the best texts to prepare.
However I wanted to ask you what were the best texts to be followed to practice and especially the topics to be better known to really have a hope of passing the tests.

I would like to enroll in Computer Engineering and then in Robotics, so I think the tests are from the Faculty of Industrial and Information Engineering.

Any suggestions for preparation are welcome :)

Thanks for your time!

Hello royjon,
I'm a 3rd year student in computer engineering. The admission problems of the Scuola Normale are a bit different from those of Sant'Anna: the former are generally more difficult (especially in the recent years), also they're quite similar to the problems from competitive math and physics contests; on the other hand, you don't need advanced mathematical knowledge to address Sant'Anna admission problems, just get a solid understanding of the concepts learned at high school. The key is not in the memorization of many formulas or equation, but in your ability to put basic skills together in order to solve a complex problem.
Back to your question (how to prepare), the best material are of course the admission problems of the previous years: although there are only 2 available in the website (https://www.santannapisa.it/it/scienze- ... le-prove-1), they're enough to give you an idea of their structure and level of difficulty. In that webpage you also find two long PDFs with math and physics problems: as you can see, they're different from the problems given in the last years, anyway they're still good for training, as well as "The problems of Mathematics of the Normale di Pisa" are.
Personally, I believe that the most important skill to train is the attitude to piroblem solving: I've really benefited from taking part in math competitions (italian mathematical olympiad) when I was at high school, since they're perfect to develop the right mentality to face hard tasks you've never seen before. Don't know if you have any experience with those competitions, they might be helpful.
Unluckily, I have no suggestions about specific books, since I didn't use any in my preparation. Good-quality high school books are definitely enough to reach the average level of knowledge required to pass the test, just make sure you truly understand what's behind those concepts.
Popular topics are probability, combinatorics and mechanics: of course this list is incomplete, you may stumble across different kind of problems.
If you have any other questions, feel free to open a new thread!
