Lightspark 0.5.0 — Bacchus released


After the last round of bug fix­ing and improve­ments over the release can­di­date I’m happy to announce that ver­sion 0.5.0 of Lightspark, a FOSS flash player imple­men­ta­tion aimed at sup­port­ing newer flash files (SWF 9+), is finally released.

Beside sta­bil­ity improve­ments there is no new great new fea­ture since the last released can­di­date (see here for more info). You can grab your copy of the sources on Launch­pad as usual. Pack­ages for both Ubuntu natty and oneiric are avail­able from our PPA. Pack­ages for your favorite dis­tro will be prob­a­bly avail­able in a short time. I’d also like to say “thank you” to all down­stream pack­agers for the crit­i­cal work they have always done.

As always bug report­ing and test­ing is very appre­ci­ated. If you need any help you can drop into the #lightspark chan­nel on Freen­ode.

    Youtube: no sound, no but­tons, the video is flick­er­ing like hell and has graphic glitches like green and pink pixel etc.

    The but­tons were made not vis­i­ble by an update of the YouTube player. We need to improve mouse events sup­port to get them back.

    About the sound please check that you have a work­ing pulseau­dio instal­la­tion or try the recently added sdl back­end (instruc­tion about chang­ing back­ends are avail­able in the lightspark con­fig­u­ra­tion file /etc/xdg/lightspark.conf)

    About the graph­ics glitches, they’re most prob­a­bly video dri­ver issues. Please try a less recent (or more recent) mesa version.

    1) Of ocurse I have work­ing PulseAu­dio. It works with every other pro­gram.
    2) The video glitches are most likely NOT video dri­ver issues, because they — also — work with every­thing else. Compiz/Mutter, Clut­ter, XBMC, games, etc. Never had any problem.

    I don’t want to be rude, but every sin­gle one of the free Flash reim­ple­men­ta­tions was a big let­down. Not one made it to a usable state, before just another guy appeared on the stage and thought he can make it all bet­ter. This soft­ware is no excep­tion. It is released in a pre­ma­ture and badly tested state.

    I now have Gnash installed. It plays Youtube at least. Even if it uses dou­ble the CPU power of Flash.

    What I want to say: In gen­eral I appre­ci­ate your effort on try­ing to imple­ment a free Flash clone. But per­haps you should con­sider to use your pre­cious time on a project with bet­ter chances.

    About Gnash work­ing, YouTube specif­i­cally send an old, gnash com­pat­i­ble, SWF when gnash is detected.

    I have only the point of view of a user/tester, but you say :

    Yes, it’s released in a pre­ma­ture state but it’s also a good way to chase and fix all the bugs appear­ing on the road to a sta­ble free Flash player.
    Besides Lightspark adver­tises itself as being in intense devel­op­ment, so its cur­rent state shouldn’t come as a sur­prise. No one uses e.g. Way­land right now and then comes com­plain­ing about its state.

    So it’s far from being per­fect — or even usable with all web­sites using Flash apps — but, damn, give it a chance instead of just being so neg­a­tive and crit­i­ciz­ing what peo­ple are try­ing to achieve.

    To apig­notti : good work as always, it’s a pity Youtube changed the shape of its player. Keep up the good work !

    I don’t want to be rude, but if you just lis­ten to what apig­notti has to say, you’d actu­ally find out that he’s prob­a­bly right. We’ve had a lot of reports of graph­ics glitches and like 90% of the time they ARE caused by buggy drivers.

    In an effort to be as effi­cient as pos­si­ble LS hap­pens to use some fea­tures that are unsup­ported or not fully sup­ported by some dri­vers. Just because other apps work doesn’t mean LS should. So claim­ing that’s prob­a­bly not the issue, with­out know­ing what you’re talk­ing about is kind of lame.

    Finally, as men­tioned before: LS is in a state of con­stant devel­op­ment. apig­notti tries to release as often as pos­si­ble to both attract new devel­op­ers and attract new (occa­sional) users that might pro­vide use­ful bug reports. Would you want him to just do it all by him­self up until it’s usable for every flash file in existance?

    Just be glad some peo­ple are putting their time into this project instead of com­plain­ing, which by the way doesn’t help any­one anyway.

    Nice post. This one savoured me to pop my ionic com­pounds like a chem­i­cal sub­stance which drains my brain.
